back to work

Of course I got called into work my first day back to be there at 7am, AND we had a huge snowstorm making it impossible to get our car up the hill to the hospital. Matt had to drop me off at trax just so I could get to the hospital to relieve the night midwife. It was a crazy day, with two women in labor, one birth, and me running back to the call room every 3 hours to pump! When Matt picked me up after 7 that night I was pretty beat. The Gig did fine of course, under the care of her auntie Liz and tolerating the shrieks and swats of her favorite cousin, baby Hank. Going back to work so far has been bittersweet. On the one hand, I miss the Gig and our time together, on the other hand, our time together can get mundane and boring. Also, I really love my job and the work I do with women. A few people have asked me so far if having my own baby has changed me as a midwife. I'm still trying to process it all, so right now I'm not sure. It does feel a little different attending a woman in labor. I can't say that I am a better midwife, maybe just different. I'll keep mulling over this question and let you know in a few years what I come up with. Here is some more of the Gig for those of you who can't seem to get enough (my Mom):

Oh! I love the chubbas! And it is good and bad to go back to work. I think it is important to go back to work. It makes you a better mother to have the balance... though some days it just seems crazy in so many different ways.

It was so fun to watch baby G. She went wide eyed and cross eyed every time she heard baby hank growl (very cute) and spent much of the day starring at the christmas lights on our tree. She was perfect. It was so fun.

Great bath photos! When they just sit there and make cute face after cute face, you just have to keep taking photos. Love them all!

I didn't go back to work until five months postpartum. And then only 25 hours a week. But it became a very good time of life for our little family. You're amazing, Celeste! Look forward to hearing more of your thoughts.

How many hours do you work a week? I pumped, but luckily didn't have to at work. I got to the point where I could pump every 8 hours with Sonja when she started solid food. Right now I'm every 6 with Natalia. I hope the same happens for you so you're not dying. Is it hard to relax at work so you can let down when people are paging you, etc? Forgive my intrusive questions. I'm just really interested!

Oh the glorious Fatness! Tomorrow I'll get to hold her! Liz is amazing to watch two babies (and sounds so happy about it). I love that you have two Henry's--well a Henry and a Hank. Finnegan is going through another hunger strike so it will be a riot to compare the two. Work, smirk, you can do it all, Celeste! YOu're super woman!

I'm working full-time, so 40 hours a week (or more). I pump every 3 hours at work, and yes, it is a little crazy, although I have a great Medela pump and am able to get a letdown.

I can't get enough of that girl either. She is adorable. The balance of work and motherhood is still one I am trying to figure out. On the one hand, it felt great to quit work, but on the other hand, I miss a lot of it and would love to do more of it now. I would love to get your perspective on this. Sorry your first day back was so brutal.
